As the Turkish partner (Karadeniz Technical University) of the BlackNETs Project, we recently performed our first ghost net removal operation to help protect the fragile benthic ecosystems along our coast. Using an ROV developed by Degz, we mapped the seafloor and searched ghost nets. Once located, ghost nets were retrieved by divers.
This operation combines technological innovation with hands-on conservation to tackle one of the most persistent marine threats. Ghost nets continue to endanger marine life and habitats, often remaining unnoticed for years. Regular mapping and removal are essential for reducing this pressure and supporting ecosystem recovery.
This is just the beginning. We will continue these efforts as part of an ongoing commitment to a cleaner, healthier Black Sea.
